Abstract Eighty two genotypes of sweet potato of Indian collection were subjected for molecular characterization. Different 31 SSR markers were employed for population study of the genotypes with a total of 70 alleles and an average PIC value of 0.47. The SAHN dendrogram based on UPGMA clustering method depicted total 6 sub clusters where the highest K values for different genetically distinct populations interpreted was 5. POPGENE structure revealed the smallest group of total seven genotypes with highest genetic purity from genotypes of the states, West Bengal and Telengana collections. Factorial analysis majorly differentiated the genotypes between two groups of eastern to middle and collections from southern part of India.
