Social acceptance of third-generation biofuels

An important aspect related to the successful development and market uptake of third-generation biofuels are social acceptance issues; absence of social acceptance can create a significant barrier, hindering their development. Achieving social acceptance strengthens trust between consumers, communities, and companies, thus empowering companies’ acceptance while preventing time delays and reactions that could lead to increased costs. In this context, the present work aims to present the different dimensions of social acceptance, i.e., acceptance on the socio-political, community, and market dimension (including consumer attitude); relevant stakeholders and factors affecting acceptance; levels of public awareness and knowledge; consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) and willingness to adopt; cases of support and opposition, concerning the acceptance of biofuel applications; the importance of public engagement; best practices from the side of public authorities and private actors, relevant to each acceptance dimension.
