•9 products of near-surface temperatures were evaluated with consistent in-situ data.•Spatial heterogeneity was considered when validating coarse-resolution products.•MODIS LST is accurate but with data gaps; all-weather LST can be an alternative.•LST has greater spatial heterogeneity and clear-sky bias than air/soil temperatures.
