•Penconazole dissipation was evaluated in courgette and tomato during >40 days.•Different kinetic models were observed in laboratory and greenhouse trials.•Persistence of penconazole was relatively short (<30 days) in both studies.•Nine metabolites were tentatively identified and semi-quantified.•Some identified metabolites may be more toxic than penconazole.
