Design of composite cathodes for sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries

Sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries have been assumed as one of the most promising future battery systems. However, a complementary design philosophy, i.e., ionic/electronic kinetics in solid state, chemomechanical failures and (electro-)chemical compatibility, is still missing. This perspective summarizes the vital factors related to the composite cathode design in terms of ionic/electronic transport networks, chemomechanical properties, and (electro-)chemical compatibility. The fundamental principles underlying electrode design are also included and emphasized. Based on previous studies, we propose the methodology to understand these phenomena for constructing composite cathodes in depth to guide the design of advanced all-solid-state batteries.
