Entropy-maximization oriented interpretable health indicators for locating informative fault frequencies for machine health monitoring

•Probabilistic health indicator (HI) is proposed.•Proposed HI is defined based on the sum of weighted spectral amplitudes and its newly defined constraint.•Novel convex degradation model is proposed that integrates entropy maximization with maximum sparsity weights.•Optimized model weights can locate fault characteristic frequencies.
