Iron status and cardiometabolic risk in children

•Increased and low iron status have been linked to cardiometabolic risk in adults.•We studied what pattern of relationship is present in children.•Lower iron status was independently associated with glycaemic markers and MetS.•Higher ferritin was positively and non-independently related to other MetS markers.•The mixed pattern of relationship might imply an early risk or a growth transition.
