•CO2 and H2S co-adsorption behaviors in shale nanopores is investigated.•CO2 and H2S presented distinguished configurations on the different surfaces.•H2S is more strongly absorbed to surfaces than CO2 especially on illite.•Illite nanopores can sequestrate more sour gas in comparison to kerogen.
