•Surface pretreatment and crystal face both affect the wettability of α-quartz.•Wettability of α-quartz face is mainly led by the concentration of surface hydroxyl.•In MD simulation, percentage of surface –OH and –CH3 affects α-quartz wettability.•Pretreatment methods of α-quartz for different applications are recommended.
