摘要

•Toxicity of pure carbon nanotubes (CNTs) put limitations to its application in the field of biomedical science and engineering.•Surface modification of CNTs by the electrochemical deposition of paramagnetic Gd2O3 nanoparticles reduces its toxicity considerably.•Nuclear magnetic resonance studies indicate the carbon nanotubes/Gd2O3 hybrid nanostructure to be considered as a possible magnetic contrast agent.
