Divergent response of soil microbes to environmental stress change under different plant communities in the Loess Plateau

•Plant-climate-soil interaction is the most important variable in the microbial community differences.•Environmental stress increased the correlation between the microbial communities and environmental factors.•Soil microbes in the Agropyron grassland had a stronger ability to utilize refractory carbon than the Stipa grassland.
