•The conductive PEDOT skin on the NiCo-LDH is fabricated by the oCVD strategy.•The presence of PEDOT skin results in uniform distribution of electrical potential.•The PEDOT layer enables a low desorption energy of hydrogen for redox reactions.•The as-obtained LDH/PEDOT-10 electrode shows superior electrochemical performance.
