•POMs/FeCl3 conditioning effectively enhanced the sludge dewaterability.•Pre-oxidation and re-flocculation effect was noted in POMs/FeCl3 system.•POMs promoted the denaturation of the released proteins.•Cells were further destroyed due to the presence of POMs.•POMs/FeCl3 conditioning could effectively remove ARGs.
