•3D printing forms dual gradients of crystallinity and roughness in PEEK actuator.•Reversible, multiple-way actuation of PEEK actuator achieves at room temperature.•Actuation of 3D-printed PEEK can be easily programmed globally or partially.•PEEK actuator can sense incoming flow of solvent vapor within 0.16 s.•Robust PEEK actuator can reversibly grab heavy cargos without retraining.
