•Mechanochemical reaction occurred between POPs-HMs in soil and NCC occurred.•More than 86% POPs and 98% HMs were degraded/solidified by mechanochemical reaction.•C-O bond of BDE209 is preferentially broken under mechanochemical action.•Mechanochemical technique is promising for POPs-HMs co-contaminated soil remediation.
