Evaluation of shock migration performance for a multi-stable mechanical metamaterial

•A multi-stable metamaterial considering viscoelasticity were proposed and fabricated.•Successive collapse of protype is observed both in quasi-static and shock experiments.•The protype reduced shock acceleration from 147 g to 22 g in drop-impact testing.•The reaction force of protype increased by 50% when considering viscoelasticity.
