Teachers’ use of class time and student achievement

•We study teachers’ choices about how to allocate class time.•Math scores are higher when teachers give more time to individual practice.•English scores are higher when teachers give more time to discussion and group work.•Teachers rated as highly effective by their peers raise test scores substantially.
