•Enhanced adhesion of PEDOT:PSS to electrode was achieved through a diazonium chemistry.•Surface pretreatment improved charge transfer between PEDOT:PSS and Pt electrode.•The presence of aryl layer promoted the deposition of PEDOT:PSS affecting its capacitance.
