•Can soil health predict corn agronomic performance?•Soil health was assessed using biochemical soil health indicators and mid-infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS).•Both soil health assessment methods accurately predicted corn performance in nutrient trials.•Mid-DRIFTS equaled or outperformed biochemical soil health indicators on estimating crop performance.•Mid-DRIFTS has potential to directly estimate crop performance without calibration with soil indicators.
