Fast image processing method for coal particle cluster box dimension measurement and its application in diffusion coefficient testing

•An approach is proposed to characterize the shape characteristics of coal particle clusters rapidly and quantitatively.•The solution of the diffusion coefficient for irregular coal particles has been achieved based on inverse problem numerical simulation.•A feasible method for quantitatively assessing the influence of coal particle shapes on the diffusion coefficient is provided.
