Root distributions, precipitation, and soil structure converge to govern soil organic carbon depth distributions

•Greater precipitation promotes gradual changes in SOC with depth in native prairies.•Agricultural lands in the same region exhibit similar but non-significant trends.•Surficial changes to land use affect soil structure down to 2 m.•Reduced rooting abundances appear to modify soil structure on decadal timescales.
