Comparing Novel Antibiotics and Carbapenems for Complicated Intra-Abdominal Infections: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

•This meta-analysis investigated the clinical efficacy and safety of novel antibiotics including ceftazidime-avibactam, ceftolozane-tazobactam and eravacycline vs carbapenems for the treatment of patients with complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAIs).•No significant differences in terms of clinical cure and microbiological eradication rate were observed between the study group and the control group.•The risks of adverse events were similar between the groups.•The clinical efficacy, microbiological response and safety of the novel antibiotics were comparable to carbapenems for the treatment of patients with cIAIs.
