•Stretching properties of CCNTs are greatly dictated by pitch length and spiraling pathway.•Conventional series-parallel rules in coil stiffness are not applicable for CCNTs.•CCNTs show distinctive toughness that is mainly controlled by pitch length and spiraling pathway.
