•High purity carbon monoxide production by formic acid dehydration was demonstrated.•HPW loading on TiO2 enhances the Brønsted acidity of catalyst.•Catalyst acidity-activity correlation in formic acid dehydration was revealed.•H2O adsorption on the acid sites causes the deactivation of the catalysts.
