Preparation of direct Z-scheme hierarchical MoS2/MnO2 composite for efficient adsorption and wide spectrum photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in water

•Hierarchical MoS2/MnO2 composite was successfully prepared by a simple method.•The catalyst shows superior adsorption, wide spectrum photocatalysis and stability.•Illumination promotes the degradation in the solution and on the composite surface.•Hierarchical structure, oxygen-doping, radicals and Z-scheme mechanism were analyzed.•The catalyst shows significant potential for efficient removal of organics in water.
