摘要
Resident role models are critical to the clinical functioning of a therapeutic community (TC). In this chapter, we apply an Exponential Random Graph Model (ERGM) to social networks of peer role model nominations taken from 2 TCs, one for women and one for men, to answer this question. In both units, there is evidence of a positive feedback loop in which those who are nominated are likely to receive further role model nominations. In both units, the number of affirmations that residents send is positively correlated with the number of role model nominations. Women reciprocate nominations while men do not, suggesting that role model status is less hierarchical among women. Self-stigma and previous substance abuse did not predict role model status. These results suggest that role model status arises from interactions between TC residents rather than preexisting characteristics and that gender influences the extent to which it is hierarchical.
