Resting saliva volume as a risk factor for hypogeusia: A retrospective study

•Patients with hypogeusia had a lower resting saliva volume than healthy individuals for all tastes, but not for stimulated saliva volume.•In addition to conventional taste tests (filter paper disk method, electrogustometry, whole mouth gustatory test, serum zinc level measurement, and history taking), measurement of the resting saliva volume is useful for diagnosing and treating hypogeusia.•Oral moisturization may prevent hypogeusia, particularly in cases of elevated salty or bitter taste thresholds.
