•This review presents recent advances over the past decade in 23Na MRI.•Methodological advances are described for acquisition and post-processing.•Practical considerations for the accurate quantification of MRI data are provided.•We highlight novel RF hardware (e.g., RF coils) for 23Na head and body MRI.•And we summarize the variety of clinical research applications of 23Na MRI.
