•Co(Ⅱ)/PAA system showed desirable IOH removal efficiency under neutral conditions.•Coexisting anions and humic acid lead to IOH decomposition suppression.•IOH was degraded to small molecule byproducts through six pathways.•IOH degradation byproducts were significantly ecotoxic and biodegradable.
