•BCN doped with Cu(I) adsorption sites have been successfully prepared.•BCN-Cu-0.04 shows remarkably enhanced ADS performance.•BCN-Cu-0.04 displays high adsorption selectivity for 4,6-DMDBT.•The main force is S-Cu coordination and π-π interaction.
