Cumulative socioeconomic status and incident type 2 diabetes among African American adults from the Jackson heart study

•Combined effects of socioeconomic factors may affect downstream risk of type 2 diabetes among African American adults.•The association between cumulative socioeconomic status and incident type 2 diabetes differed by age group.•These results suggest African American adults with low socioeconomic status should be targeted for diabetes interventions.
