•Circulating expressions of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 had been elevated in various inflammatory conditions.•ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 regulates firm attachment and transmigration of leukocytes to endothelial cells in inflammatory conditions.•ICAM-1 & VCAM-1 facilitates occurrence of cardiac events by regulating leukocyte infiltration, recruitment and endothelial cell proliferation.•ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 as the diagnostic biomarkers might facilitate the assessment of enhanced cardiovascular risk.
