Evaluation of the antenna parameters for inspection of hidden defects behind a reinforced shield tunnel using GPR

•GPR penetration capability through a reinforced shield tunnel lining is evaluated.•A 400–600 MHz antenna is appropriate for the shield tunnel inspection using GPR.•The antenna polarization direction should be in the tunnel longitudinal direction.•The antenna stand-off height from the tunnel lining should be within 10 cm.
