Low chemical consumption of wastewater ammonium nitrogen recovery through Donnan dialysis-membrane stripping process

•The DD-MS hybrid process saved 32.7% alkali and 34.9% acid during ammonium nitrogen recovery from landfill leachate.•Extra chemical consumption during the DD-MS process depends on bicarbonate concentration in the wastewater and sodium hydroxide concentration in the draw solution.•The reduction rate of chemical consumption increases with increasing bicarbonate concentration in the wastewater.
