Defensive response of evolutionarily naïve Pinus sylvestris to the mountain pine beetle fungal associate Grosmannia clavigera in comparison to Pinus ponderosa

•Pinus sylvestris exhibited higher levels of monoterpenes than P. ponderosa following artificial wound inoculation with Grosmannia clavigera.•Induction of limonene, 3-carene, and myrcene was greater in P. sylvestris than P. ponderosa.•The chemical induced response of P. sylvestris to artificial wound inoculation was similar to that induced by wounding alone.•P. sylvestris may provide one alternative plantation species for timber production in the Great Lakes Region following mountain pine beetle incursion.
