•Real and simulated GEDI were combined to bi-temporal footprint-level observations.•Bi-temporal GEDI data can be used to observe structural change in disturbed forests.•GEDI metrics display a larger variety of fire responses than spectral metrics.•Fire severity and forest type impact spectral and structural fire response.
