Statistical downscaling of GRACE TWSA estimates to a 1-km spatial resolution for a local-scale surveillance of flooding potential

•Random forest machine learning algorithm perform very well in simulating the subbasin scale variations of Terrestrial water storage.•The integrated analysis of the GRACE and fine resolution hydrological modelling, turns out to be a promising methodology for small scale assessment of flooding.•The Kizilirmak Basin (KB) has been susceptible to extreme hydrological event of inundation in Feb 2013.•Soil Moisture and Precipitation are two dominant flood-conditioning parameters of the KB.
