•Trigonella foenum-greacum has been used locally for the treatment of diabetes, inflammation, etc.•Cell cytotoxicity assay, cell cycle distribution, apoptosis assay, MMP, and the ROS analysis.•Activation of p53-mediated mitotic catastrophe, consequently leading to apoptosis.•Trigonella foenum-greacum induced a significant increase in mitochondrial depolarization and ROS.
