An integrated assessment of carbon emissions from forest fires beyond impacts on aboveground biomass. A showcase using airborne lidar and GEDI data over a megafire in Spain

•Fire impacts on biomass are traditionally measured on aboveground biomass.•We evaluate shrubs, litter and above and below-ground biomass.•GEDI data and airborne lidar were used to estimate biomass and C emissions.•We tested GEDI data to measure change from pre-to post-fire conditions.•No forest structural changes in assessed mega fire in Spain.
