Assessment of Auditory Perception Abilities Using Temporal Envelope and Fine Structure Processing in Children with Self-Limited Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes.

•The present study evaluated auditory perception by examining the temporal envelope and fine structure in children with SeLECTS. The temporal envelope processing was measured using the temporal modulation transfer function (TMTF) and temporal fine structure processing using the temporal fine structure low-frequency test (TFS LF). The TMTF was measured for the modulation frequencies 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 Hz. In both groups, the thresholds worsened with the modulation rate increase. However, the thresholds at 4 Hz were poorer than other modulation frequencies observed in both groups, Comparing modulation detection thresholds between the groups revealed that children with SeLECTS performed poorly than the TDC. The TFS LF test was performed for the frequencies 250, 500 and 750 Hz. The performance was better for the 250 Hz than the 500 and 750 Hz in both groups. The between-group comparison revealed that children with SeLECTS have higher (poorer) thresholds than the TDC, and the difference was statistically significant.
