Highlights Waterlogging seriously reduced the photosynthesis of Zanthoxylum armatum seedling. Ethylene application could enhance photosynthesis by adjusting the corresponding gene expression, and increasing the photosynthetic pigments content. Ethylene application improved the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters under waterlogging.
