Steatotic Liver Disease As a New Nomenclature for NAFLD from the Perspectives of the MENA Region: One Size Fits All This Time.
Journal of hepatology(2023)
Abstract
We read with interest the recently published multi-society endorsement of the new nomenclature of what was formerly known as fatty liver disease, introducing the new terminology steatotic liver disease (SLD) as an overarching term encompassing different causes of steatosis.1 An essential criterion for a disease nomenclature to be widely and globally accepted is its generalizability and applicability in various geographical regions and its ability to consider and accommodate the heterogeneity among different social situations and stakeholders.
