Preference-choice mismatch and university dropout

•We investigate the university dropout phenomenon by comparing occupational preferences at school and major choices at university.•We find that students whose occupational preferences does not fit their subsequent major choice are more likely to drop out.•We find strong gender differences in the dropout incidence and dropout timing.•We find suggestive evidence that indecisiveness and preference changes are the channels that explain our main findings.
