Optical E-Field Sensor Based on the Pockels Effect of LiNbO3

Optical electric field measurement is widely utilized in various research areas. In this study, we systematically designed an optical electric field (E-field) sensor for a comprehensive analysis. It is achieved by the Pockels effect of lithium niobate. Firstly, the sensing principle and the system design of the sensing system are expounded. Then, the sensor body is produced, and its input/output characteristics are obtained through experiments. The calibration is carried out between a pair of parallel square metal planes according to the standard. The designed sensor has the advantages of large measurement range, wide frequency band and small size. Its maximum measurable electric field is 801 kV/m.
