Resilience and Its Effect on Loneliness in Old Age People

Background: Resilience can be one of the factors that can affect the feeling of loneliness in older persons. Living in rural, suburban and urban areas has different lifestyle particularly for older people.Purpose: To find out whether there is any difference in the level of resilience and loneliness of older persons living in rural, suburban and urban areas.Methods: Data were collected from 150 (50 urban, 50 suburban and 50 rural) elderly people aged 60 to 80 years of Uttar Pradesh. The tests used were the Resilience Scale and UCLA Loneliness Scale.Results: It is clear from the mean score that the elderly people living in the suburban were found to have more loneliness and less resilient than the elderly people in the urban and rural area, but the level of resilience was found to be higher in the elderly in urban areas as compared to the elderly living in rural and suburban areas.Conclusion: The present study makes it clear that the place where an older person lives has an impact on his resilience and loneliness.
