Polyether-based ionic liquids from simple mixing of terminal diamines with organic acids to dicationic diammonium carboxylates

•Characterisation of a number of this family with two different mid sections and numerous counter ions.•Simple to prepare ionic liquids based formed by the simple mixing of diamino ethers with organic acids.•Very low energy and solvent free route to ionic liquids which involve no chemical processing other than mixing.
