•The novel concept of evaporation and condensation section length ratio was proposed.•The thermal performance of flat heat pipe with various LREC values was investigated.•The optimum value of LREC was verified to be 1.0 experimentally.•The recommended LREC value range in application design should be 0.8 ∼ 1.25.
