•The first systematic literature review of DL-based methods for fault interpretation.•Only CNN-based deep learning methods have been used for fault interpretation.•73 seismic datasets were summarised from the included 56 research articles.•Two sets of advantages and 12 challenges are summarised.•Research trends, candidate solutions and future research directions are discussed.
