•Conjugated cationic dyes crosslink GO through π-π and electrostatic interactions.•The nanosheet orientation and interlayer structure in GO membrane were optimized.•The molecular structure of cationic dye is critical to separation performance.•The membrane exhibits excellent performance for water/butanol separation.
