Tetraazapyrene Functionalized Nitroxide Radical As Self-Deposited Functional Interlayer in Organic Solar Cells

Novel compounds tetraazapyrene (TAP) and TAP functionalized nitroxide radical (TAP-TEMPO) were synthesized. The energy of frontier electron orbitals of the TAP-TEMPO is appropriate for use of TAP-TEMPO as a functional electron-blocking (hole transporting) interlayer for polymer:fullerene organic photovoltaic devices (solar cells). Both the active layer and the TAP-TEMPO interlayer can be deposited simultaneously on one-step spin-coating process using a ternary solution of polymer, fullerene and TAP-TEMPO. The TAP-TEMPO interlayer enhances efficiency of the photoelectric conversion for the inverted organic solar cells.
